Course Overview

We recommend this package for individuals who possess considerable workplace experience and have at least two years leadership and management responsibility experience. Individuals at this level display initiative and judgement in planning, organising, implementing and monitoring their own workload and the workload of others. This involves the use of communication skills to support individuals and teams to meet organisational or enterprise requirements. business environment within industry, business and society, and promotes the ability to identify factors that impact most on management success and business operations.

BSBADM502 Manage meetings

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage a range of meetings including overseeing the meeting preparation processes, chairing meetings, organising the minutes and reporting meeting outcomes. It applies to individuals employed in a range of work environments who are required to organise and manage meetings within their workplace, including conducting or managing administrative tasks in providing agendas and meeting material. They may work as senior administrative staff or may be individuals with responsibility for conducting and chairing meetings in the workplace.

BSBLDR501 Develop and use emotional intelligence

This unit covers the development and use of emotional intelligence to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the context of the workplace. It includes identifying the impact of own emotions on others in the workplace, recognising and appreciating the emotional strengths and weaknesses of others, promoting the development of emotional intelligence in others and utilising emotional intelligence to maximise team outcomes. It applies to managers who identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources and who deal with unpredictable problems. They use initiative and judgement to organise the work of self and others and plan, evaluate and co-ordinate the work of teams.

BSBHRM506 Manage recruitment selection and induction processes

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage all aspects of recruitment selection and induction processes in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. It applies to individuals or human resource personnel who take responsibility for managing aspects of selecting new staff and orientating those staff in their new positions. It is not assumed that the individual will be directly involved in the selection processes themselves, although this may well be the case.

BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create systems and process to organise information and prioritise tasks. It applies to individuals working in managerial positions who have excellent organisational skills. The work ethic of individuals in this role has a significant impact on the work culture and patterns of behaviour of others as managers at this level are role models in their work environment.

BSBLED502 Manage programs that promote personal effectiveness

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage programs with a health and wellbeing focus. The unit addresses management of the range of programs that would typically be associated with health and wellbeing such as stress management, smoking cessation, exercise, and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). It applies to individuals who take responsibility for managing staff health and wellbeing programs or activities. It also has particular relevance for managers of human resources or diversity programs, frontline managers and specialist consultants responsible for promoting a balance between work demands and personal life. It is not assumed the individual will be directly involved in delivering the programs.

BSBINN502 Build and sustain an innovative work environment

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create an environment that enables and supports the application of innovative practice focusing on a holistic approach to the integration of innovation across all areas of work practice. It applies to individuals working in leadership or management roles in any industry or community context. The individual could be employed by the organisation, but may also be an external contractor, the leader of a cross organisation team or of a self-formed team of individuals. The work group could be permanent or temporary in nature.

BSBMGT517 Manage operational plan

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and monitor implementation of the operational plan to provide efficient and effective workplace practices within the organisation’s productivity and profitability plans. Management at a strategic level requires systems and procedures to be developed and implemented to facilitate the organisation’s operational plan. This unit applies to individuals who manage the work of others and operate within the parameters of a broader strategic and/or business plan.

BSBLDR502 Lead and manage effective workplace relationships

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead and manage effective workplace relationships. It applies to individuals in leadership or management who have a prominent role in establishing and managing processes and procedures to support workplace relationships taking into account the organisation's values, goals and cultural diversity. At this level work will normally be carried out within complex and diverse methods and procedures, which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

BSBWOR502 Lead and manage team effectiveness

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead teams in the workplace and to actively engage with the management of the organisation. It applies to individuals working at a managerial level who facilitate work teams and build a positive culture within their work teams. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures requiring the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

BSBCUS501 Manage quality customer service

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop strategies to manage organisational systems that ensure products and services are delivered and maintained to standards agreed by the organisation. It applies to individuals who supervise the provision of quality customer service within an organisation’s procedures framework by others. At this level, individuals must exercise considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

BSBMGT516 Facilitate continuous improvement

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead and manage continuous improvement systems and processes. Particular emphasis is on the development of systems and the analysis of information to monitor and adjust performance strategies, and to manage opportunities for further improvements. It applies to individuals who take an active role in managing a continuous improvement process in order to achieve an organisation’s objectives. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem-solving and decision-making strategies.

BSBRSK501 Manage risk

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to manage risks in a range of contexts across an organisation or for a specific business unit or area in any industry setting. It applies to individuals who are working in positions of authority and are approved to implement change across the organisation, business unit, program or project area. They may or may not have responsibility for directly supervising others.

Delivery mode

This course is offered as distance-based training and assessment where students are able to access the learning materials via the online learning system. No classroom training or attendance is required.

Students are also offered the option of receiving the learning materials on a USB device via post. If this is your preferred option, you must select the USB option on the Enrolment Form. Please note that the eBook (online textbook) must be accessed online and is not included on the USB.

Who should complete this Double Diploma Package?

First Choice Training identifies two distinct target groups for this qualification.

Target Group 1

The first target group for this qualification is current practitioners who are seeking to upgrade their skills and knowledge to obtain a formal qualification. This group of candidates will normally consist of:

  • Team leaders
  • Front line managersr

  • Executive officers
  • Program consultants
  • Program coordinators

Target Group 2

The second target group is people new to the industry, but ideally possesses at least two years leadership, management and business experience. This group of candidates will normally consist of:

  • People looking for a career change
  • People who need this qualification for employment purposes
  • People seeking a formal qualification
  • People with some management or supervisory experience seeking a formal qualification
  • People taking on a management or supervisory role within their organisation and seeking a formal qualification

Duration and amount of training

Each enrolled student has up to 12 months to complete their training course however the amount of training will vary for candidates in Target Group 1 and Target Group 2. To elaborate on this, the proposed amount of training for Target Group 2 is twelve (12) months as these candidates will most likely be new to the construction, mining and services industries.

On the other hand, the proposed amount of training for Target Group 1 is 6 –10 months depending on how many units are approved through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT). Please see below the pro-rata calculations for the amount of training in Target Group 1.

Entry requirements

After enroling in the course, each student must complete the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Indicator Tool. This LLN evaluation will assist First Choice Training in identifying each learner’s needs and appropriate support to be offered by First Choice Training. Each student must also provide their USI (Unique Student Identifier) before they will gain access to their materials. If you do not have a USI, you can create one at

This LLN Indicator Tool must be returned to the Training Department within 10 business days to [email protected] so that it can be assessed by a trainer. Please note that First Choice Training has up to 10 business days to finalise your LLN Indicator Tool from the date of receipt. First Choice Training offers a range of reasonable adjustment options and support services if a learning need is identified through the LLN Indicator Tool.

Assessment overview

Each unit comprises of assessment tasks such as written questions, case studies and practical assessments which must be completed in full before being submitted for marking. Assessments for qualifications are competency based, which means students are assessed against the unit of competency (unit) requirements

Assessment marking system:

  • Satisfactory (S) result: the student’s submitted work satisfies the learning requirements and all competency standards for the unit (in accordance with the National Register
  • Not Yet Satisfactory (NYS) result: the student’s submitted work does not demonstrate their understanding of all competency standards in the unit. If a student receives a ‘not yet satisfactory’ outcome, he or she will receive written feedback from a trainer/assessor, clearly outlining where the gaps are. The student will then be required to rectify these gaps and re-submit their assessment for marking.

Once a student receives a satisfactory result for all required assessment tasks a competent (C) outcome will be awarded for the entire unit. The student must demonstrate their understanding of all competency standards in each unit before receiving a competent outcome.

Students have three (3) attempts to demonstrate competency, otherwise a unit re-enrolment fee applies (please see fee schedule contained in the Student Handbook).

Resource requirements

Each student must have access to specific resources in order to complete the course. These requirements apply to each unit within the course. Prospective students must have access to the following resources:

  • Desktop computer or laptop
  • One of the following operating systems on the computer or laptop:
  • Windows 7, 8 or higher
  • MAC operating system (Apple Mac computers may need additional software to recognise the functionality settings of the learning materials)
  • Stable internet connection with a minimum download speed of 3mbps. Prospective students can go to to perform a speed test of their internet connection (this web link will be available on the website)
  • Current version of a web browser, for example:
    Mozilla Firefox
  • An email account – this can be created through yahoo, hotmail and gmail
  • The latest version of Adobe Reader and Windows Media Player
  • Printer and scanner
  • Microsoft Office (2007 version or later) that includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Video camera or recording device such as webcam (smart phones such as iPhones cannot be used)
  • A room or environment that is conducive for the delivery of the practical component of the course (that is, large enough to accommodate a group of four people)
  • Access to a group of at least four (4) people to partake in the practical components of this course

Recognition of Prior Learning

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a method of assessing your current knowledge, skills and experiences that may have been acquired through informal training such as work history or formal training. RPL applications will be reviewed after you have enrolled and paid for the course. After enrolment, an RPL Kit can be requested from the Student Services Department by email [email protected] .

Evidence Gathering

Documented evidence to support your RPL claims is imperative and collecting as much evidence as possible will allow First Choice Training to assess your competency in your chosen qualification and/or units of competency. You need to ensure that all areas are covered and supply supporting evidence to build a portfolio of your skills and experience. Without documented evidence, your RPL application will not be successful, so it is important to link your evidence to the outcomes of the units you have selected. Remember that collecting your evidence can take time; however we require this evidence to ensure that we can establish your competencies in the relevant areas.

Currency of your documents

When we assess your RPL application, it is important to show currency. This meaning your evidence should preferably be from the last two (2) years and in most cases should not go back more than five (5) years. Training and qualifications go back to ten (10) years (but no further than this) to demonstrate your knowledge of vocational education and training.

Authenticity and validity of your documents

It is vital that all evidence you supply is authentic and valid. This simply means it must be what you say it is and be verifiable as such. Work samples must be a product of your own work output either wholly or collaboratively. Ensure any evidence supplied that includes other people’s work product or other sources, is appropriately referenced to prevent any issues regarding plagiarism. For more information on plagiarism, refer to the Student Handbook.

Verified Documents

When providing certificates and transcripts to support your RPL claims, it is part of our compliance requirements that these are certified by a Justice of the Peace, to ensure these are reliable and accurate. This will also allow us to apply direct credits where previously completed units of competency are applicable to your RPL application and have exactly the same unit code and title. Please note that a credit transfer is recognition of your formal training completed through another registered training organisation (RTO). Credit transfers are considered as part of the RPL process.

Credit Transfer (CT)

First Choice Training also recognises Statements of Attainment and Record of Results issued by other registered training organisations (RTOs). Candidates must submit a JP certified copy of their certificate and transcripts.

First Choice Training has a dedicated Student Services Department which provides administrative support to enrolled students (e.g. how to log into the online learning system).

Changes to agreed training services

First Choice Training will notify current students by email of any changes to the agreed services including third party arrangements and change in ownership. This information will be communicated to current students within 2 business days of confirmation that the agreed services have been applied.

Once a student has submitted the Enrolment Form, payment for the course must be made immediately.

A non-refundable establishment fee of $399.00 is payable on enrolment, followed by 20 weekly payments of $54.55. (Total financial commitment $1,490.00). Students must complete an EziDebit Direct Debit Request form for the remaining instalments to be deducted from their credit card or bank account – details of the process are outlined below.

Please note: the interest free payment plan option is not available for purchase orders.

Step 1:

The student will receive an EziDebit Direct Debit Request form from First Choice Training within two (2) business days following payment of the establishment fee. First Choice Training will complete the direct debit arrangement information on the form, including the Student’s details, to avoid any confusion.

Step 2:

The student has two (2) business days to return the completed EziDebit Direct Debit Request form to [email protected] including payment method, signature and date. The EziDebit Direct Debit Request form will be returned to the student if the form is missing the payment method details, student signature and date (this may cause some delay).

Please note that the following fees will be charged to the student by EziDebit:

  • Amex credit card transaction fee - 3.8% each time
  • SMS Payment Reminder - $0.28 each time (applies if the student selects the field: ‘I authorise EziDebit to remind me of upcoming debits via SMS’)

Step 3:

The first instalment payment will be scheduled five (5) business days after the completed EziDebit Direct Debit Request form has been received by First Choice Training. The weekly instalments will be directly debited on this day for the remaining instalments.

Students will be denied access to training materials, support services and the online learning system if instalment payments are not received by First Choice Training according to the debit arrangement. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure there are sufficient funds in their nominated bank account or credit card. Failed payment fees do apply and are imposed by EziDebit. Step 4:

Once the completed EziDebit Direct Debit Request form has been received by First Choice Training, the student will receive the LLN Indicator Tool within two (2) business days via email.
